What the heart does
Using the heart boosts your Magic level by one plus a tenth of your level, rounded down, so +10 at 90 to 99 Magic. You can use it every 7 minutes, and the timer is per player, so owning two does not help. Dying resets it, which some players exploit in safe areas. It is the standard magic boost for mage bosses, raids and anywhere a potion would be wasted.
Where it drops
Hearts drop from superior Slayer monsters, which you unlock with Bigger and Badder for 50 Slayer points. Superiors spawn about 1 in 200 kills on task (1 in 150 with the elite Combat Achievements). The higher the Slayer level of the monster, the better the heart chance:
| Superior | Slayer level | Heart chance |
|---|---|---|
| Colossal hydra | 95 | about 1/160 |
| Nuclear smoke devil | 93 | about 1/198 |
| Greater abyssal demon | 85 | about 1/346 |
| Cave abomination | 58 | about 1/782 |
The rates are per superior kill, not per normal kill, so at 1 in 200 spawns a heart is a long-term Slayer by-product rather than something you farm directly. The Slayer task calculator shows how often you will be assigned the high-level tasks that spawn the best superiors.
What moves the price
The saturated heart upgrade costs 150,000 ancient essence, raises the boost by a further 3 and cuts the cooldown to 5 minutes. It is irreversible, so every saturated heart permanently removes one imbued heart from the market. Supply comes from the Slayer player base as a whole, which grows after big Slayer updates.
If you only boost now and then, compare the heart with a permanent magic damage upgrade such as the occult necklace, or a stack of ordinary magic potions, which give +4 per dose. The magic boost table lists every option with its current price, and Slayer training covers the tasks that throw up superiors most often.
