What the number counts
It is the total of players logged in to every OSRS world, members and free-to-play, from every client: the Jagex Launcher, RuneLite, the official client and mobile. It counts accounts, not people, so someone playing two accounts at once counts twice.
Why Steam numbers look so small
Steam charts only see players who launched the game through Steam. Most players do not, so Steam typically shows a few thousand players while the game itself has many tens of thousands online at the same moment. If you are judging how healthy the game is, use the in-game total, not Steam.
Reading the graphs
The 7-day graph rises and falls once a day. The low point comes when it is night across both Europe and the Americas, and the peak lands when European evenings overlap with the American afternoon. Weekends often run a little higher than weekdays.
The long-term chart is where updates show up. Big releases bring sharp spikes: a new skill, a new raid, or the opening days of a Leagues season, when lots of returning players log in at once. Most spikes fade over a few weeks to a new, slightly higher baseline. Sailing, released on 19 November 2025, is the most recent new skill and the first one added to Old School RuneScape since launch.
OSRS compared with RuneScape 3
The two games run on separate servers and keep separate counts. Old School has had more players online than RuneScape 3 for years. If you see a single figure quoted for "RuneScape" without saying which game, it is usually one or the other, not both added together.
What a busy game means for you
More players means more trading. Prices on the Grand Exchange price list tend to move fastest when the count is high, and a big update day often brings both a player spike and sharp price swings in the items tied to the new content. Flippers watch for exactly that; the OSRS flipping page shows which items are trading most right now.
Each world holds up to 2,000 players. If your usual world is full during the peak, the world list shows how busy each one is, and quieter worlds make resource spots and bosses less crowded.
