Smithing has no easy boost
Unlike Herblore, Crafting or Fletching, Smithing has no pie that adds a guaranteed +4. The two clean options are the orange spicy stew, which can reach +5 but rolls at random, and the Smithing cape at 99.
| Boost | Levels | Source | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spicy stew (orange spice) | -5 to +5 | Recipe for Disaster (Evil Dave) | Random roll each stew, untradeable |
| Smithing cape | +1 | 99 Smithing | Coal bag holds 36 and goldsmith gauntlet effect while worn |
The cape's +1 is close to pointless because you already have 99, but its other perks are worth having: the coal bag holds 36 coal instead of 27 while it is equipped, and it gives the goldsmith gauntlets' extra xp on gold bars at the same time.
Using spicy stew for Smithing
Orange spice covers the production skills, so one stew rolls Smithing along with Crafting, Fletching, Cooking and the rest. Three doses of spice give the widest range, -5 to +5. The routine is simple: stand next to the anvil or furnace with your bars or ore, eat a stew, read the skill tab, and eat another if the roll fell short. Because the stew is untradeable you will need to make your own:
- Finish Evil Dave's part of Recipe for Disaster.
- Take a cat into Evil Dave's basement, west of the Edgeville bank, and let it catch hell-rats. Each catch can leave a spice shaker.
- After the subquest, the hell-rat behemoths guard one colour each and give a full four-dose shaker per kill. A wily cat handles them best.
- Add three doses of orange spice to a normal stew. Bring fish or a bucket of milk in case your cat needs healing.
Levels people try to reach
A stew boost lets you smith or smelt the item early. It does not let you wear it, since armour and weapons check your base level.
| Item | Smithing needed | Lowest real level with +5 |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon kiteshield | 75 | 70 |
| Runite bar | 85 | 80 |
| Adamant platebody | 88 | 83 |
| Rune dart tip | 89 | 84 |
| Rune arrowtips | 90 | 85 |
| Dragonfire shield | 90 | 85 |
| Rune platebody | 99 | 94 |
In practice a stew boost is a one-off tool. Rolling for +5 every few minutes is fine for a diary task, but for training it is quicker to stop at the level you have and use a Smithing calculator to plan the bars.
Rules that catch people out
Dragon Slayer II needs a real 70 Smithing; its requirement is marked not boostable, so no stew helps there. Achievement diary tasks do accept boosts. Boosts never stack: only the highest one counts. A visible boost drains one level per minute on a background timer, so be ready before you eat. One quirk works in your favour: hopping to a free-to-play world resets most boosts, but Smithing and Mining keep theirs, as do your Prayer points.
For the full route, the osrs smithing training guide covers the route from 1 to 99. Smithing money making shows which bars and items sell above cost today, and steel bar prices help when you are planning cannonballs. The Crafting boost page uses the same stew for a different skill.
