Profit each is the value of what you make minus the materials, at current Grand Exchange mid prices and before the 2% GE tax. Negative numbers are a cost. Greyed rows need a higher level than you have.

What the smithing calculator shows

Smelting rows take ore and coal in and give a bar out. Anvil rows take bars in and give an item out, so their cost depends on the bar price and on what the finished item is worth, which for most armour is its alch value. Gp per xp compares the two. Smithing has no xp-boosting outfit: the Smiths' uniform speeds actions up instead (see below), so keep the bonus selector on none.

The members toggle matters here. Bronze to rune smelting and anvil work are open to free players, but the Blast Furnace, Giants' Foundry and the goldsmith gauntlets are members only.

Iron smelted at an ordinary furnace only works half the time unless you wear a ring of forging, so the calculator's iron bar count is the number of successful bars. The Blast Furnace in Keldagrim halves the coal per bar and never fails on iron. A smithing catalyst from the Giants' Foundry shop also halves coal at a normal furnace and doubles the smelting xp of a coal bar, but it does nothing to the coal used at the Blast Furnace.

Gold bars: the fast, expensive answer

With goldsmith gauntlets (from Family Crest) each gold bar gives 56.2 xp instead of 22.5. At the Blast Furnace that makes gold bars the quickest xp in the skill from level 40, roughly 380,000 an hour with good banking. The catch is cost: you are buying gold ore and selling gold bars, and the gap between the two is usually a loss per bar. The calculator shows that gap today and the gold bar price page shows how it has moved.

Below 60 Smithing the Blast Furnace foreman charges 2,500 coins per 10 minutes, and on worlds without a team you also pay into the coffer for the dwarves (72,000 coins an hour). Neither cost is in the per-bar figures, so add them if you are under 60.

Anvil work and the Smiths' uniform

Every bar gives the same anvil xp whatever you turn it into, so platebodies win on speed: one action uses five bars, worth 62.5 xp at bronze up to 375 at rune. Each piece of the Smiths' uniform gives a 20% chance to finish an anvil action a tick early, and the full set makes every action four ticks instead of five, so it raises xp per hour without changing xp per item. It costs Foundry reputation from the Giants' Foundry.

Giants' Foundry itself (15 Smithing, Sleeping Giants) melts bars into giant swords and pays well in xp per bar. Many players use it with mithril and adamant bars, and the full uniform adds about 20% to foundry rates.

Cheap and AFK options

Steel cannonballs (35 Smithing, Dwarf Cannon) give 25.6 xp per bar and take minutes per inventory, so they suit playing on a second screen. The steel bar price and the cannonball price decide whether you lose or gain. Dart tips (The Tourist Trap) make ten tips per bar and often sell well because rangers buy darts for the toxic blowpipe.

Questions players ask

How many gold bars do I need for 99 Smithing?

With goldsmith gauntlets each gold bar gives 56.2 xp, so from the start of level 40 you need 231,268 gold bars to reach 99. Without the gauntlets the count is far higher, at 22.5 xp a bar. The calculator works it out from your exact xp.

What is the fastest way to train Smithing?

Gold bars at the Blast Furnace with goldsmith gauntlets from level 40 are the fastest for most players. Giants' Foundry is a strong alternative that also earns reputation for the Smiths' uniform. Late game, rune platebodies and rune 2h swords at an anvil are good if you have bars to use.

Do I need 60 Smithing for the Blast Furnace?

No, but below 60 the foreman charges 2,500 coins for every 10 minutes you use the furnace. From 60 there is no fee. You still need to have started The Giant Dwarf to reach Keldagrim, and on most worlds you pay a coffer for the dwarves who work the pumps and belt.

Can you make money training Smithing?

Smelting runite, adamantite and mithril bars at the Blast Furnace is often profitable because the furnace halves the coal you buy. Cannonballs and dart tips can turn a small profit as well. Gold bars and platebodies usually cost money per xp. The profit column shows which rows are positive today.

How many rune platebodies to 99 Smithing?

Rune platebodies need level 99 themselves, so they are a post-99 or 200m item. From 88 the usual anvil choice is adamant platebodies at 312.5 xp each: 27,676 of them take you from the start of 88 to 99.
