How the fishing calculator reads
Fishing is a gathering skill, so most rows cost nothing but bait, feathers or sandworms. The profit column is the value of the raw fish minus that bait, which turns the table into a quick answer to a common question: if I fish to my goal here, what is the pile worth? The bonus selector covers the angler's outfit, which adds 2.5% xp for the full set and comes from the Fishing Trawler.
Free players can fish shrimps, sardines, herring, anchovies, trout, salmon, pike, tuna, lobster and swordfish; switch off members to see only those.
Fish people actually train on
| Catch | Level | XP each | Catches from that level to 99 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lobster | 40 | 90 | 144,414 | Cage; AFK, sells steadily |
| Leaping sturgeon | 70 | 80 | 153,711 | Barbarian rod; also 7 Strength and 7 Agility xp |
| Monkfish | 62 | 120 | 105,839 | After Swan Song |
| Karambwan | 65 | 50 | 251,701 | Karambwan vessel, raw karambwanji bait |
| Shark | 76 | 110 | 106,346 | Harpoon; slow but valuable |
| Anglerfish | 82 | 120 | 88,445 | Rod with sandworms, Piscarilius |
| Dark crab | 85 | 130 | 75,199 | Wilderness Resource Area |
| Sacred eel | 87 | 105 | 86,307 | Zul-Andra; cut up for the scales used in anti-venom |
Counts start at the beginning of the listed level; put in your real xp for the exact figure. Barbarian fishing is the odd one: each leaping fish also gives Strength and Agility xp, and it needs 15 Agility and 15 Strength for trout, 30 for salmon and 45 for sturgeon.
Fast xp, AFK xp and gold
The fastest Fishing comes from tick manipulation: 3-tick barbarian fishing reaches about 108,000 xp an hour at 99, and 2-tick harpooning swordfish and tuna more with a crystal harpoon. Both take full attention. Tempoross (35) and Aerial fishing (43 Fishing, 35 Hunter) are the middle ground: decent xp, low effort, and their own rewards on top. Leechfin from 78 after The Blood Moon Rises is another strong option.
For AFK, lobsters, monkfish, sharks and karambwans let you fill an inventory with a few clicks. Karambwans also feed the fastest Cooking method, which is why many players fish their own. Gold-first fishing points to anglerfish, dark crabs and sacred eels: slow xp, but each catch is worth more. Check the anglerfish price and raw shark price before a long session.
Minnows and infernal eels
Minnows (82, Fishing Contest and the full angler's outfit) give little xp but trade in at the Fishing Guild for raw sharks, so they are a money maker rather than training. Infernal eels (80) need a fire cape to enter Mor Ul Rek and are cracked with a hammer for tokkul, onyx bolt tips and lava scale shards; the tokkul calculator shows what that tokkul buys.
Sailing shoals
Sailing added shoals you fish at sea: haddock from 73, yellowfin from 79, halibut from 83, bluefin from 87 and marlin from 91. Their xp per catch differs from the land fish, so if you sail anyway, compare them with the spots in the table before picking a method.
Gear that helps
- Fish barrel (Tempoross reward): holds 28 raw fish, so banking trips carry twice as many.
- Dragon or crystal harpoon: faster harpoon catches for tuna, swordfish and sharks.
- Kourend and Kebos diary amulet: a 2% to 8% chance of an extra fish by diary tier; the extra fish gives no xp but adds to profit.
A full level route with quests is in the Fishing training guide, and profit-first spots are ranked in Fishing money makers. If you cook what you catch, the cooking calc picks up from here.
