How the herblore calculator works
Each row is one finished action: adding a secondary to an unfinished potion, cleaning a grimy herb, or upgrading a potion you already own. The cost column takes the current price of every input away from the price the finished potion sells for. A negative figure is what each potion costs you; a positive one is profit. Divide that by the xp and you get gp per xp, the one number worth comparing across potions.
Use the category chips to hide cleaning or upgrade rows when you only want straight potions. Herblore is a members skill, so the members toggle changes nothing here. Herblore has no xp-boosting outfit, so leave the bonus selector on none. The gear that helps this skill saves ingredients instead of adding xp, covered further down.
The potions that carry the skill
| Level | Potion | XP each | Made from |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | Attack potion | 25 | Guam potion (unf) + eye of newt |
| 45 | Super attack | 100 | Irit potion (unf) + eye of newt |
| 55 | Super strength | 125 | Kwuarm potion (unf) + limpwurt root |
| 66 | Super defence | 150 | Cadantine potion (unf) + white berries |
| 69 | Antifire potion | 157.5 | Lantadyme potion (unf) + dragon scale dust |
| 76 | Magic potion | 172.5 | Lantadyme potion (unf) + potato cactus |
| 90 | Super combat potion | 150 | Super attack, super strength and super defence (4) + torstol |
Two rows need a footnote. Stamina potions (level 77) pay per dose: a 4-dose super energy with four amylase crystals gives 102 xp. Extended antifire (level 84) works the same way, 110 xp for a 4-dose antifire and four lava scale shards. The calculator prices both per finished potion, so compare them on gp per xp rather than on xp each.
Fast xp is cheap to work out; cheap xp is not
Herblore speed is set by banking, not by the potion. Around 2,500 potions an hour is normal for mixing at a bank chest, so the fastest option is simply the highest-xp potion you can make. The real decision is cost.
Magic potions and antifires give the most xp per potion in this table and usually cost the most per xp. Super strength and super defence potions sit in the middle and are the safest bulk choice, because super combat makers buy them every day, so the GE always takes your output. Check the stamina potion price against a super energy and four amylase crystals before a big batch: when amylase spikes, the margin flips.
Super combat potions are the odd one out. Three finished 4-dose potions and a torstol go in, and at some prices the result sells for more than the inputs. The calculator shows whether that holds today. For more ways to turn potions into coins, see Herblore money makers.
Buying unf potions or making them
Mixing a herb into a vial of water gives no xp. That step only matters for cost: sometimes the (unf) potion trades below a clean herb plus a vial, sometimes above. Compare the two rows before buying thousands of either. Ironmen growing their own herbs can plan runs with the OSRS farming calculator.
Gear that cuts the cost
- Amulet of chemistry: a 5% chance that a potion comes out with four doses instead of three.
- Alchemist's amulet (charged): raises that chance to 15%.
- Prescription goggles: a 10% chance not to use the secondary, which matters most on pricier ones like dragon scale dust and limpwurt roots.
The goggles and the alchemist's amulet come from Mastering Mixology in Aldarin, which needs 60 Herblore and Children of the Sun. The calculator assumes no savings, so with this gear your real cost per potion sits a little below the figure shown.
Early levels and herb cleaning
The starter quest in Taverley opens the skill, giving 250 xp and level 3. Jungle Potion, Recruitment Drive and The Dig Site then take you from 3 to 19 with no ingredients bought. Cleaning grimy herbs gives little xp (2.5 for a guam, 7.5 for a ranarr, 15 for a torstol) but grimy herbs often trade below clean ones, so the cleaning rows double as a small money maker. The full level-by-level route is in the Herblore training guide.
