How best in slot is decided
Best in slot means the item that gives the most damage in that slot for that style, not simply the biggest number on the stats screen. Strength bonus and accuracy decide most slots, but a weapon's speed, special effects and the target's defences matter more than raw bonuses. A slow weapon with huge stats can lose to a faster one, which is why high-bonus weapons need checking in the DPS calculator before you buy.
That is also why the weapon slot has no single answer. The Scythe of Vitur is the melee pick for large targets, but the Ghrazi rapier is the stab pick for small, stab-weak bosses. The twisted bow is the ranged pick against bosses with high Magic, while the Bow of Faerdhinen and Zaryte crossbow often win against low-Magic targets.
What changed in 2025 and 2026
The Doom of Mokhaiotl added Avernic treads, which take over the boots slot for all three styles once upgraded with primordial, pegasian or eternal boots. The Avernic treads price covers the tradeable base version; each upgrade makes them untradeable. The same boss added the cloth that turns a tormented bracelet into confliction gauntlets, now the top magic gloves. June 2026 brought the necklace of rupture and seeking dragon arrows for ranged, and the new Oathplate armour gives slash setups a new head, body and legs.
When to swap off best in slot
| Situation | What replaces best in slot | Slot |
|---|---|---|
| On a Slayer task | Slayer helmet (i) | Head |
| Undead targets | Salve amulet (ei); does not stack with the slayer helmet | Neck |
| Dragons | Dragon hunter lance, crossbow or wand | Weapon |
| Demons | Emberlight, purging staff or scorching bow | Weapon |
| Cheap all-round boost | Elite void with the matching helm | Head, body, legs, hands |
On task, the slayer helmet (i) boosts melee, ranged and magic, so it almost always beats the best helm. The salve amulet (ei) gives a larger boost against undead but replaces the slayer helmet bonus rather than adding to it.
Budget setups
The three budget tiers stick to gear that costs little or nothing beyond time: Barrows gloves, the fire cape, Ava's devices, an Ardougne cloak and the fighter torso. They will handle Slayer, Barrows and most mid-level bosses. From there, the melee gear progression, ranged gear progression and mage gear progression pages show the order to upgrade in, one tier at a time.
Pieces to buy first
If you are coming from a budget setup, upgrade the weapon before anything else in every style. After that, the slots with the best damage for the gold are usually the neck, gloves and boots. Full armour sets such as Torva, Masori and ancestral come last because they add the least per coin. The small slots punch above their weight: an Ultor ring alone adds more strength than a Torva full helm.
