Why the count is in essence
A pure essence used at the nature altar gives 9 xp whether it turns into one nature rune or, from 91, two. Multiples change your profit, never your xp. That is the most common mistake in Runecraft planning: players count runes, then wonder why the level arrived late. The calculator keeps the two apart, essence for the xp side and runes for the gp side.
The same goes for Raiments of the Eye. Each piece adds 10% more runes, and the full set adds a further 20% for 60% in total, but none of it adds xp. Count it as income, not speed.

Five earth runes per essence needs 104, which only happens at 99 with a boost from an orange spicy stew. Blood and soul runes from the Arceuus altars use dark essence fragments rather than pure essence and never multiply, which is part of why they are so popular for AFK profit. Aether runes, added in May 2025, need 90 and give 20 xp each; they are made at the Cosmic altar from pure essence, a soul rune and an aether catalyst.
Getting more xp from each essence
Daeyalt essence. Mined under Darkmeyer after Sins of the Father, it crafts exactly like pure essence but pays 50% more xp. The catch is supply: you mine it in small amounts yourself, so per hour it usually ends up slower than buying pure essence, even though per essence it is far better.
Ourania Altar. No talisman, no level requirement and roughly 1.7 times normal xp per essence, but the runes you get are random and weighted by your level. With Daeyalt on top the two stack, and the medium Ardougne Diary adds bonus runes there. Sunfire and wrath runes cannot come from it.
Methods worth a row in your plan
- Guardians of the Rift from 27 after the entry quest from Wizard Persten. Around 40,000 xp an hour from 50, rising to about 65,000 past 85. Games pay a bonus of 45 times your level if you collect at least 300 energy, and abyssal pearls buy the Raiments (hat 400, top 350, bottoms 350, boots 250) and the abyssal needle for 750.
- Lava runes from 23 with a binding necklace, earth runes and pouches. With Magic Imbue (82 Magic) it is the fastest solo xp, about 65,000 an hour at 50 and over 100,000 from 85, and it costs gp.
- Ourania Altar at any level, from about 42,000 xp an hour in the 50s to around 77,000 at 99 with pure essence. Ourania Teleport needs 71 Magic and Lunar Diplomacy.
- Blood and soul runes at 77 and 90 in Arceuus. Low xp, low effort and steady money from blood runes and soul runes.
- Nature runes from 44, a long-standing profit method that doubles at 91. Check the nature rune price before committing, because its value follows demand from high alchers.
