Runecrafting from Quest Lamps to Soul Runes

The table below lists every rune you can craft, with the level, xp per essence and what each one costs or earns per xp at today's prices. Decide first if you are training for speed or for gold, because Runecraft is the one skill where those two paths barely overlap. The route underneath sorts them by level.

Pick a route before you pick an altar

Runecraft has four sensible ways to 99, and most players mix two of them. Guardians of the Rift is the default: it is social, steady and hands out the gear that makes later methods better. Lava runes are the fastest thing you can do alone but drain your bank. Arceuus blood and soul runes are slower and pay well. The Ourania altar sits apart as the low-attention option.

RouteBest forXP per hourMoney
Guardians of the RiftMost players, ironmen25,000 in the 40s, 65,000 from 85Pays a little and gives the Raiments
Lava runesFastest solo xp61,300 at 50, about 100,000 at 85Costs gold every hour
Arceuus blood and soul runesProfit and calm playabout 49,000 on souls at 90Strong, mostly from the runes
Ourania altarLow effort, any level42,000 at 50 with pure essencePays for itself in random runes

Rates assume a decent pouch setup, stamina potions and a player who has done a few hundred laps. Your first hours on any method will run well under them.

Levels 1 to 27: let quests do it

Crafting air runes from level 1 is miserable and nobody needs to do it. Client of Kourend (after X Marks the Spot) gives lamps that take a fresh account to about level 9, The Ascent of Arceuus adds a couple more, and Enter the Abyss gives 1,000 xp along with the small pouch. The quest that unlocks Guardians of the Rift then needs 10 Runecraft and carries a level 10 account up to the 27 the minigame asks for. It also hands you the medium pouch.

Later quests are worth timing well. The Eyes of Glouphrie gives 6,000 Runecraft xp, What Lies Below 8,000 (it needs 35 Runecraft), Lunar Diplomacy 5,000 and Perilous Moons 5,000. Lunar Diplomacy matters for more than its reward: its spellbook holds Astral Contact, Ourania Teleport at 71 Magic and Magic Imbue at 82.

Guardians of the Rift from 27

Most accounts spend the middle of the skill here. You mine fragments, craft guardian essence, and run it to whichever altar the portals point at. The game also pays you in reward searches, which is where the Raiments of the Eye and the abyssal needle (for the colossal pouch) come from.

Runecraft levelRunecraft xp/hBonus Crafting xp/hBonus Mining xp/h
40 to 5025,0002,3001,200
50 to 7540,0003,7002,000
75 to 8550,0004,7002,500
85 to 9865,0006,2003,200
9970,0006,6003,500

Finish a few quests first and the minigame gets better: Lost City opens cosmic runes, Troll Stronghold law runes, Mourning's End Part II death runes and Sins of the Father blood runes. Each altar you can use is a guardian that counts for points instead of one you have to skip. Varrock armour gives a 10% chance of double fragments, and an abyssal lantern with redwood logs saves inventory space (yew logs give extra points if you have no redwoods).

Stay until you have the full Raiments set. It gives 10% more runes per piece and a 20% set bonus, 60% in total, which turns every profitable method later in this guide into a better one. It adds no xp.

Lava runes: the fast lane from 23

Lava runes are crafted at the Fire Altar using pure essence and earth runes. Wear a binding necklace so every combination succeeds. With Magic Imbue (82 Magic) and Astral Contact you no longer need talismans, and that is the setup behind the best solo numbers:

LevelPouchesXP per hour
23None43,200
50Colossal pouch65,700
75Colossal pouch80,000
85Colossal pouch, full capacity100,800

Beginners usually reach between half and nine tenths of these figures. The method still works without the Lunar spellbook if you bring earth talismans, at slightly lower rates. Expect to lose gold the whole way, mostly on essence, earth runes and stamina doses. If you have 67 Sailing, the sailors' amulet to Deepfin Point is one of the bank options for this method.

Before buying a large stack of essence, put your current and target level into the runecrafting calculator. It shows how many essence and runes the trip will take and what each rune costs per xp right now, which makes the gap between lavas and Guardians easy to see.

Blood and soul runes at Arceuus for profit

From 77 Runecraft the Arceuus blood altar in Great Kourend is the classic money route. You mine dense essence (38 Mining), turn the blocks into dark essence at the Dark Altar, chisel each block into 4 fragments (38 Crafting), then craft at the blood altar for 23.8 xp per fragment. Kourend Favour no longer applies. A run of full inventories gives close to 5,000 xp each time, and 73 Agility makes the shortcuts much less tedious.

At 90 the same loop moves to the soul altar, worth 29.7 xp per fragment and about 49,000 xp an hour. Both altars count as low effort compared with lavas and the blood rune price decides how much the blood stage earns on any given week. Daeyalt essence does not work here.

The true blood altar

Sins of the Father opens the original Blood Altar below Meiyerditch, reached through Canifis or fairy ring DLS. You need a blood or catalytic talisman or tiara, and you use pure essence with every pouch you own. It is faster to restock than Arceuus and earns more per hour, at the price of being more click-heavy. Past 95, wrath runes (after Dragon Slayer II) are another strong earner if you have the Raiments.

The Ourania altar for low-effort hours

The Ourania altar has no level requirement and turns each essence into a random rune, so you get roughly 1.7 times the normal xp per pure essence and a pile of mixed runes that more than covers the essence. Reach it with Ourania Teleport (Lunar Diplomacy, then 71 Magic) and bank with Eniola beside the altar, who takes a small fee in runes.

LevelPure essence xp/hDaeyalt essence xp/h
50 to 5942,07763,115
75 to 7957,27085,905
90 to 9874,716112,074

Daeyalt essence needs Sins of the Father and 60 Mining, gives 50% more xp, and stacks with the altar's own bonus. Mining the shards is part of the deal, so the real rate depends on how much you mine between trips.

Pouches, essence and stamina

  • Pouches: small at 1, medium at 25, large at 50, giant at 75. The colossal pouch replaces all of them and grows with your level, holding a full 40 essence from 85. You make it with an abyssal needle, which takes 56 Crafting.
  • Run energy: stamina potions are the standard. A charged ring of endurance doubles how long each dose lasts.
  • Essence: pure essence works at every altar, so buy that rather than rune essence once you are a member.
  • Rune pouch: holds your Lunar spell runes in one slot, which matters on lava and Ourania runs.

What each level opens

Nature runes come at 44, law runes at 54, death runes at 65 and blood at 77. Soul and aether runes arrive together at 90 and wrath at 95. Higher levels also multiply output: at 59 you make two cosmic runes per essence, at 74 two chaos runes, at 95 two law runes. Those breakpoints are why players who stop at 77 often go back later. If you are tracking how far 99 is from where you stand, the OSRS xp table shows that the last seven levels cost almost as much as the first 92 combined.

Runecraft also feeds your spellbook. Every rune you craft for profit is one you do not buy for Magic training, which is why ironmen push Runecraft earlier than mains do.

Questions players ask

What is the fastest way to train Runecraft in OSRS?

Solo, lava runes are the fastest: about 61,300 xp an hour at 50 with Magic Imbue and a colossal pouch, reaching around 100,800 at 85. They lose money all the way. Guardians of the Rift is slower in the early levels but almost free, and it reaches 65,000 xp an hour from 85.

Is Guardians of the Rift good for Runecraft training?

Yes, it is the route most players use from 27. It gives decent xp, small amounts of Crafting and Mining xp, and the Raiments of the Eye set, which adds 60% more runes on every later method. Doing Lost City, Troll Stronghold, Mourning's End Part II and Sins of the Father first lets you use more altars and earn more points.

What is the most profitable Runecraft method?

At 77 and above, blood runes are the big earners, either at the Arceuus altar using dark essence or at the true Blood Altar after Sins of the Father. At 90 soul runes take over at Arceuus, and wrath runes from 95 also pay well with the Raiments. Exact profit moves with rune prices, so check them before a long session.

What is the most AFK Runecraft method?

Arceuus blood and soul runes need the least attention per hour because most of the time is spent mining dense essence. The Ourania altar is also relaxed and works from level 1, giving about 1.7 times the usual xp per pure essence and random runes in return.

Which quests give Runecraft xp?

Enter the Abyss gives 1,000 xp, the quest that unlocks Guardians of the Rift takes a level 10 account to 27, The Eyes of Glouphrie gives 6,000, What Lies Below 8,000, Lunar Diplomacy 5,000 and Perilous Moons 5,000. Client of Kourend and The Ascent of Arceuus give lamps that clear the first ten or so levels.
