What the construction calculator works out
Each row is one build: an oak larder, a mahogany table, a gnome bench. Cost is the planks (and any nails, cloth, steel bars or marble) at current prices, and since the furniture is removed again for the next build, nothing comes back. Every row is a cost, so gp per xp is the column to sort by. The bonus selector covers the carpenter's outfit, which adds 2.5% xp for the full set.
Construction is a members skill, so the members toggle has no effect on this table.
The standard fast route
| Levels | Build | XP each | Planks each | Planks for the stretch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 33 to 52 | Oak larder | 480 | 8 oak | 1,760 |
| 52 to 77 | Mahogany table | 840 | 6 mahogany | 9,660 |
| 77 to 99 | Gnome bench | 840 | 6 mahogany | 82,566 |
| 66 to 74 | Teak garden bench (cheaper) | 540 | 6 teak | Alternative to tables |
| 74 to 99 | Oak dungeon door (cheaper) | 600 | 10 oak | Alternative to benches |
Plank counts assume you start at the beginning of each band and use the listed build all the way. The tool gives the exact total from your real xp.
Mahogany is the fastest wood and the most expensive per xp. Teak garden benches and oak dungeon doors cost noticeably less per xp at the price of some speed, which is why many players switch to them once the mahogany bill starts to hurt. Mahogany plank prices move with demand, so check the calculator again before you buy for a big goal rather than relying on last week's figure.
Mounted mythical capes
A mythical cape mounted in the quest hall's guild trophy space gives 370 xp for three teak planks. Removing it hands the cape back, so you can build it again and again and the planks are the only cost. It is slower than tables or benches but one of the cheapest options per xp in the skill. The build itself is level 47, but the cape comes from Dragon Slayer II, which needs 50 Construction to start, so in practice it opens at 50.
Servants and plank supply
How you get planks into your house decides your real xp per hour. A demon butler (50 Construction) fetches planks from the bank fastest, and a regular butler from 40 is the next best. Servants ask for wages after every eight trips; a servant's money bag (58) pays them for you. Plank Make on the Lunar spellbook (86 Magic, Dream Mentor) turns logs into planks without the sawmill and trains Magic too. The sawmill operator charges a fee per plank, so compare log and plank prices before converting your own.
Cheap and AFK: Mahogany Homes
Mahogany Homes contracts give less xp per hour but cost far less per xp, because each contract pays a bonus on top of the furniture and uses few planks. Expert contracts (70) give the best rates, and contract points buy the carpenter's outfit and a plank sack. The Mahogany Homes calculator works out contracts and planks for a goal.
Levels worth reaching
50 gets the demon butler and, with Dragon Slayer II, the mythical cape method. 72 builds the marble portal nexus, the first tier that packs several house teleports into one frame. It needs marble blocks, as do the fancy and ornate rejuvenation pools at 85 and 90. Beyond that, most players train towards the house upgrades they want for bossing, such as a better pool and a jewellery box. The full plan with early quests is in the Construction training guide.
