Skill training guides for Old School RuneScape

These guides take each skill from level 1 to 99 with a route you can follow band by band, plus the fastest, cheapest, profitable and AFK alternatives. Pick the skill you are working on below. If you are not sure where to start, read the section on choosing what to train first.

How each guide is laid out

Every guide follows the same idea: one recommended route from level 1 to 99 in bands, with realistic xp per hour at the start of each band, then the alternatives. Under the route you will find the fastest method, the cheapest, the one that makes money and the most AFK option, so you can trade speed for coins or attention. The interactive table on each page prices every method from today's Grand Exchange trades, so the cost per xp is current rather than whatever it was when a video was recorded.

Choosing what to train

Skills fall into rough groups, and each group pulls on the others.

GroupSkillsWhy it matters early
CombatAttack, Strength, Defence, Ranged, Magic, Slayer and the Prayer statBossing, Slayer tasks and quest fights
GatheringFishing, Mining, Woodcutting, Hunter, FarmingRaw materials and steady income
ProductionHerblore, Crafting, Smithing, Fletching, Cooking, Construction, Firemaking, RunecraftPotions, gear, food and house teleports
SupportAgility, Thieving, SailingShortcuts, run energy, coins and new areas at sea

A few habits save hours whatever your goal:

  • Do quests early. Many give large xp rewards and unlock better training spots, which makes the first levels of several skills much faster.
  • Train Herblore and your Prayer level alongside combat. Potions and combat boosts do more for your kill speed than a few levels of Attack.
  • Get Agility and Construction to useful levels sooner than feels necessary. Shortcuts, run energy and a house with portals speed up everything else.
  • Start Farming runs early. They take minutes a day and the xp builds while you do something else.

Sailing

Sailing is the newest skill and the 24th overall. It has its own OSRS Sailing guide, and it ties into several older skills: some new fish, ores and cooking ingredients only come from the sea.

Pair any guide with its calculator. The skill calculator shows how many actions you need to a target level, the OSRS xp table shows how the xp per level climbs, and skill boosts can get you to a key unlock a few levels early.

Questions players ask

What skill should I train first in OSRS?

Most players start with combat to around 40 to 60 while doing early quests, since quests give free xp and unlock better training. Agility, Herblore and your Prayer level pay off sooner than they look, so it is worth building them alongside combat rather than leaving them for last.

What is the fastest way to get 99 in a skill?

Each guide lists the fastest method band by band, along with its xp per hour and cost. The fastest routes are usually the most expensive or the most click-intensive, so compare them with the cheapest and the AFK option before you commit.

How many skills are in OSRS?

There are 24 skills, with Sailing the most recent addition. Hitpoints is trained alongside combat and has no separate guide here.

How much xp do you need for 99?

Level 99 needs 13,034,431 xp, and level 92 is roughly half of that. The xp table on this site shows the exact figure for every level and the difference between any two.
